Consumer stationery is a small-basket problem

Everything in the build works against that: bundles, collections sold as sets, free-shipping thresholds set from real margin, and merchandising that makes adding a second item natural.

It is also a strongly visual, gift-led category with severe seasonal peaks — back to school, the year-end diary and calendar season, the gifting weeks — and those peaks need stock decisions and a store that can be re-merchandised quickly.

Business supply is reordering

The other half of the category serves offices, schools and facilities teams buying the same consumables repeatedly against an account. Order history, saved lists, approval workflows, purchase orders and contract pricing are the features that matter, and discovery barely features at all.

Printer consumables deserve a specific mention: finding the right cartridge for a specific printer model is a compatibility lookup exactly like automotive fitment, and it is the most common reason these stores lose an order.

Catalogue depth is the shared problem

Both halves carry very large catalogues of near-identical items varying by size, colour, pack quantity and refill compatibility. Getting variants and packs modelled correctly is the single highest-value decision in the build, and the thing a generic agency most often gets wrong.
